Teaching Style
My teaching style is largely based on the Bel Canto method (Italian, beautiful singing). The method refers to the art and science of vocal technique which originated in Italy during the late seventeenth century. Once the technique is learnt correctly a singer can apply it to a variety of musical styles and genres. Lesson Structure Lessons are structured to meet the needs of each individual pupil. I began each session by working on breathing, diction and control, as well as a good vocal warm up. This is then followed by work on specific songs and repertoire depending on the individuals needs. The pupil is then taught how to apply the technique to their performance.
Exams Exams provide a structured approach to learning, and ensure students cover a wide range of repertoire. For students wanting to sit exams I regularly enter students for The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), practical and music theory examinations. There are eight grades of exams followed by Diploma level. Students enter at a level appropriate to their ability.
Preparing for an exam involves aural training tests and sight-reading tests, as well as performing four contrasting songs chosen from lists given in the syllabus.
